After over 4 decades, doing just about every job in radio and quite a few in TV, My interest in radio started at a very early age. Music was always a part of my family, with my parents both having excellent singing voices. Growing up in the 50's, radio was still king and I spent many hours listening to the network programs and the local disk jockeys. Sometime before my teens, my grandfather (who was a part time policeman in Canton, Pa) was working security for a town dance and took me along.
The music was being played by a disk jockey (Bill Sherwood) from one of the local stations (WATS Sayre, Pa) and I stood there in total awe watching him work. It was then I decided that radio was the job for me! As I got a bit older, I was allowed to go to the local dances and became friends with the disk jockeys and started hanging around at the local radio station (WMPT South Williamsport) learning everything I could. Eventually, in my senior year in high school, I passed my F.C.C. License test and I was hired first as an intern and then part-time by WLYC AM FM Williamsport.
During the summer following my graduation I did the weekend shifts and covered vacation shifts. In the fall, when one of the full-timers left to go to college I was hired full time. From there radio has been quite a ride! Over the years I have held every position in the business except owner or chief engineer. Along the way I have helped to build two radio stations and managed four, but my favorite times were those I spent on the air.
My career was spent in small market radio in Williamsport, Pa., Canton, Pa., Elmira/Horseheads, N.Y., Corning , N.Y., and Payson, Az
